The May Tournament is the traditional international tournament in rhythmic gymnastics organized by GK Maksimir in order to promote and further progress the development of rhythmic gymnastics in Croatia.
Apart from the competitive aspect, the purpose of the tournament is getting acquainted with different clubs and areas related to gymnastics, to exchange mutual experiences between coaches and judges, and to develop friendships between gymnasts through socializing and sport.
GK Maksimir is the only club in Croatia that organizes a tournament in rhythmic gymnastics while representing all three programs, respectively, all three levels ofrhythmic gymnastics.

The initiator of this competition is a longtime trainer and promoter of rhythmic gymnastics both in Zagreb and throughout Croatia - Dragana Aleksić.
At the very beginning a desire for rhythmic gymnastics to get as much devotees as possible and in order to follow the trends of the international gymnastics scene, each state of the former republic had a competition in rhythmic gymnastics. The former club Senjak from Belgrade organized The December Tournament, the club from Skopje The March Tournament, and our club GK Maksimir in 1978 organized the 1st MAY TOURNAMENT INRHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS.
It was organized on the occasion of liberating the city of Zagreb and the Youth Yoana Ivanova – Bugarska Day. The tournament was held in the sports hall ” Kutija Šibica” at Trešnjevka, while the delegations of the participants were situated in, at the time called, the Pioneer City – the City of Youth.
After the establishment of the new state of Croatia the tournament evolved into a TRADITIONAL INTERNATIONAL MAY TOURNAMENT which is being organized for 31 consecutive years in the most beautiful month of the year – in the month of May!!!!
During those three decades, all club members, from parents to gymnasts, coaches and judges, make a great sports team whose joint work and love for sport and rhythmic gymnastics place this tournament in the context of great sporting events.
Our desire is to continue to maintain the tradition of organizing an appealing, strong and highly competitive tournament, and that our gymnasts be given the chance to compete with the best, both from neighboring countries and from countries with the mightiest tradition in rhythmic gymnastics.
